Nitrous Oxide
Count on our sedation dentist team to ensure you feel comfortable and safe with nitrous oxide treatment
At Gold Coast Dental La Habra, our lightest form of sedation is nitrous oxide. You might know it by its other friendlier names: laughing gas and happy gas. Given through a nosepiece or mask, this clear, sweet-smelling gas reduces any discomfort or worry you might feel in the dental chair. It’s quick-acting, making you feel lightheaded, euphoric, and a tingling numbness throughout your body within a handful of minutes. It’s also quick to leave and wears off in as little as 3 minutes. You can even drive yourself
home after your treatment, no designated driver needed. Laughing gas is a safe option for most patients dealing with dental anxiety, even children. Patients as young as 2 and 3 years old have used it to keep them calm and happy during their first few dental cleaning without any lasting side effects. All that we recommend is that you keep your child’s meal beforehand light. Are you interested in a “happy” treatment for you or your child’s upcoming dental work? Connect with our office today at (562) 352-0434.
Oral Sedation
Watch your stress about your future dental appointment melt away with oral sedation!

A bit stronger than laughing gas, oral sedation makes for a perfect treatment option for nervous patients who need to take care of some of our more serious dental treatment options. Taken as a pill before your procedure, it’s super easy to administer, with no needles or tubes necessary.

Only an hour of prep-time is needed for the pill to work its magic, allowing you to be perfectly relaxed and easygoing throughout your treatment. Unlike the exciting happiness of nitrous oxide, you’ll be feeling tranquil and sleepy with oral sedation, and you might just nod off for a few minutes here or there. If that happens, don’t worry. We’ll be able to wake you back up with a gentle shake if we need you to do anything.
IV Sedation
Relieve even the worst dental anxieties with IV sleep dentistry!
For patients with extreme dental anxiety, we offer IV sedation, our strongest dental anxiety treatment option. Given intravenously through your vein, IV sedation dentistry, otherwise known as “sleep” dentistry, doesn’t make you unconscious as you might expect. Instead, you’ll stay awake throughout your procedure and be able to understand and respond to any questions or directions your sedation dentist may have for you. However, sleep dentistry isn’t an incorrect name either.
Patients often find themselves feeling sleepy and calm enough that they fall right asleep mid-treatment! Afterward, you may even still feel a bit drowsy or groggy following your treatment, so please work out beforehand a friend or family member who can drive you home safely. One of the great things about sleep dentistry is that it’s not just for patients with dental phobia. Many patients who want to start and complete multiple treatments in a single day, including intensive procedures
like root canals, tooth extractions, and dental implant surgery, find that IV sedation is perfect for making their whole treatment program a breeze! For quite a few patients, their memories of their treatment tend to be mostly or completely forgotten once the sedation runs its way through their system. This can be quite a relief for many. Even if they never fall asleep, it can still feel as if they took a well-deserved nap and woke up with a better and healthier smile.
-
Is sedation dentistry dangerous?
Your safety is of the utmost importance in all of our dental treatments. Our sedation dentists are expertly trained in the use of all of our conscious and unconscious sedation options. We know exactly how much is enough to give you the relaxed and euphoric feeling you need for treatment, and we never go further. It’s also safe enough that even children can use some of our lighter treatments - laughing gas is especially popular with our younger patients.
-
What helps with dental anxiety?
Besides dental sedation, there are a number of ways our patients can help soothe their worries about their treatment. Some listen to relaxing music or their favorite tunes to muffle the sounds of the office. Others create hand signs with our dentists to make sure we stop, pause, or start when you need us to. Practicing breathing methods and exercises can also calm your body down and reduce your stress.
-
How much does sedation dentistry cost?
The cost of your sedation treatment depends on both the method used and for how long. Lighter options like laughing gas are more affordable as well as shorter treatments. When discussing your upcoming procedure with your dentist, it’s important that you work out which type of treatment meets both your financial and comfort needs.
-
Do you feel pain with oral sedation?
Not at all! Oral sedation doesn’t just relax the mind, but it numbs your body, too. Your time with us will be completely pain-free, even if you’re having multiple treatments finished in a single day. We promise that all you’ll feel is a little drowsy and fully relaxed.
-
Can a dentist make you fall asleep to pull a tooth?
At Gold Coast Dental La Habra, we do not use general anesthesia to keep you unconscious. However, your sedation dentist can give you IV sedation when extracting a tooth , which can make you drowsy and help you fall asleep during your treatment. Heavier amounts also make it unlikely for you to wake up before the sedatives have worn off. And although you may stay away throughout your procedure, patients tend to remember little to none of their time under sedation after the effects have worn off.
-
How long do you have to wait to drive after laughing gas?
There’s no wait at all to drive after laughing gas treatment. Nitrous oxide is light and fast-working, cleaning your body within minutes of your mask being removed. Unlike oral or IV sedation, you can actually drive yourself home after your dental procedure without any danger.
